i-felt could already be impregnated with a saline solution to be flame-retardant (in accordance with ISO 6941 – small flame test). What is new is that we now also offer a permanent form of flame retardancy for projects with higher fire safety requirements.

This makes it possible to combine sustainable material choices with strong fire safety performance, without compromising on aesthetics.

Two types of flame-retardant impregnation

Depending on the project requirements, we offer two options:

Impregnation with saline solution (basic)

The existing treatment in accordance with ISO 6941 (small flame test), which tests how quickly a material ignites when exposed to a small flame. This treatment has a temporary effect (approximately 5 years) and is suitable for many applications.

Additional cost: €12.50/m²

Impregnation with Bemiflame NWM (permanent)

For projects of 200 linear meters or more, i-felt can be impregnated with Bemiflame NWM: a water-based, REACH-registered phosphorus-nitrogen compound. This treatment ensures a permanent flame-retardant effect without any noticeable impact on the appearance of the felt. 

Indicative tests show that this can achieve fire class B (EN 13501-1).* It is possible to conduct project-specific testing with an independent party, and we are happy to assist with this.

Additional cost: €12.50/m²

* The final classification always depends on the application, composition, and mounting.

Flexibility in purchasing

For smaller projects (<200 linear meters), we offer a solution through combination orders. By bundling orders, smaller quantities of felt can also be impregnated. This is possible from 1 roll per color (35 m x 1.8 m = 63m²).

Flame-retardant impregnated felt is suitable for, among other things:

• Office environments
• Educational institutions
• Public spaces

Also applicable in acoustic interiors

Flame-retardant impregnated felt can also be used in acoustic solutions, such as desk dividers and panels. This allows you to combine sound absorption with fire safety, without compromising on aesthetics.

Preservation of quality

The flame-retardant treatment has no noticeable impact on the characteristic properties of the material. The warm look, flexibility, and tactility of the felt are preserved.

Important considerations

• The current test results apply to i-felt (recycled textile)
• The possibilities for you-felt and biobased-felt are still being investigated
• Independent testing per project is possible
