Have your old company textiles recycled into felt

What do you do with company clothing that is no longer worn? Or with other textiles that your organization no longer uses? At you-felt, we turn it into new felt. In our own factory in The Hague, we process your organization's discarded textiles into a material in which the original colors remain recognizable.

You can repurpose that felt as wall cladding, an acoustic solution, a bag, or a corporate gift. This gives the textiles a new purpose in a form that suits you.

How does it work?

1. Intake and test phase

For each color, we start with a test to determine whether your textile is suitable for shredding and processing into felt. You will receive:

  • Bags containing shredded textile samples
  • An A4 felt sample
  • A concise report with the test results

The felt is not dyed. The color of the textile determines the color.

2. Composition & design of the felt

Together we determine how your felt will look. Based on the test, we will coordinate:

  • Which type of textile is used
  • The required volumes
  • The desired appearance in terms of color, texture and application

This way we ensure that the final result perfectly matches your wishes.

3. Initiation of the procedure

When the test is positive, we start the production process:

  • We start by aligning on your product requirements
  • We agree on the required quantity of textiles
  • We provide the big bags in advance for collecting and delivering the textiles

We schedule the delivery date on which the textiles must be in The Hague.

4. Production of felt & finished products

Once we have received your textiles:

  • Let's start making your own felt: you-felt
  • Afterwards, our participants in the social workshop will start producing the desired end products

Collaboration in the spotlight: KLM

In 2015, KLM was the first to repurpose its old workwear at i-did! We took the textile and transformed it into felt: KLM Sky Blue was born.

For the company's 100th anniversary, KLM commissioned i-did to produce various lifestyle products. Their own felt was recently used in the renovated interior of building 411 at Schiphol, thanks to a collaboration with ATELIERS Interior & Architecture.

Frequently asked questions about you-felt

Many different types of textiles can be processed into felt, including corporate wear, workwear and other textile waste. Textiles with blended fibres, prints or reflective components are also among the possibilities.

Whether your textiles are suitable depends on the material and composition. That is why, during the intake and testing phase, we examine how the textiles behave during the defibring process and whether we can make high-quality felt from them.

A you-felt project consists of several steps. We start with an initial consultation and test whether the textile is suitable for defiberization and felt production. We then agree on the desired composition and application.

If the test is successful, we agree on the required quantity of textile and begin production of the felt. Have you chosen a different end product for the new felt? As soon as the felt is ready, our studio will begin production of the lifestyle and/or acoustic interior products.  

Yes. We first test whether the supplied textiles are suitable for shredding and processing into felt. There is a charge for this fiber and felt test.

For the testing phase, we usually need 25 to 50 kg of textile. The quantity required for final production depends on the desired end product and the quantities.

As a guideline, we can make approximately 3.2 m² of felt from 1 kg of textile. The actual yield depends on the supplied material and the composition of the felt.

Yes. A you-felt project requires a minimum investment in the form of a product order. This order may consist of a combination of felt on a roll, acoustic interior products and lifestyle products.

With a you-felt process, your organization’s textiles are used as raw material for new felt. The possibilities and required volumes are coordinated in advance.

Because the composition of the final felt depends on the supplied textiles and the production process, we first investigate what is possible with your material during the test phase.

The color of the supplied textile determines the look of the new felt. The organization's recognizable colors remain visible in the end result.

During the testing phase, we will examine what is possible with your textile and what the final felt will look like.

Yes. In principle, you do not need to remove zippers, buttons and other hard parts yourself. These are removed mechanically in our factory. Logos and labels can also remain attached. After defiberization, they are no longer recognizable.

During the intake, we will discuss whether any specific preparations are needed for your textiles.

Yes. A flame-retardant treatment is optional for you-felt.

Do you have specific fire safety requirements for an interior project? Please specify these in advance so that we can determine which treatment is appropriate.
